Talks on Everyday Imaging – The Analogue and Digital Realm of the Vernacular
Join us for an international talk event in Budapest on November 2, 2023, at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. This event, organized by the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography, aims to explore the world of vernacular photography in both its analogue and digital forms.
Vernacular photography, often overlooked in favor of more curated and highbrow forms of photography, is the medium of the millions. It is an immensely flexible and expressive medium that speaks a universal language. However, the current state of photographic production is often described using apocalyptic terms such as an avalanche, an eruption, a tsunami, or a storm. These words convey the impression of an overwhelming and unstoppable flood of newly taken images, disregarding the everyday or vernacular images that have been taken since the inception of photography.
At this event, we seek to delve into the realm of vernacular photography and understand how ordinary people engage with this medium. Vernacular photography is relatable, evokes emotions, and mobilizes people. Through a series of talks by internationally recognized professionals with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, we will explore the latest contemporary, historical, aesthetic, and scholarly thoughts on vernacular photography and its peripheries.
Some of the confirmed speakers for this event include Geoffrey Batchen, Michal Simunek, The Family Museum, Lukas Birk, Judit Gellér, Miklós Tamási, Sándor Kardos, Annebella Pollen, Joanna Zylinska, and Joachim Schmid. Each speaker will offer unique insights and perspectives on vernacular photography, shedding light on the ongoing discourses surrounding this genre.

The Budapest Association for International Sports (BAIS) invites you to join their running event called “Running in November.” This event aims to bring runners of all levels together in a group or community setting to enjoy the benefits of running together.
The event is part of a training series, with this session being the first out of four. In addition to the actual run, each session will focus on one aspect of running that participants can incorporate into their own training. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced runner, all levels are welcome to join.
The meeting point for the event is Margaret Island, a beautiful park in the heart of Budapest. The exact location is in front of the staircase to MAC, which you can easily find using the provided link.
It is recommended to bring layered clothing and proper running shoes to ensure your comfort during the run. The distance for this session is one lap around Margaret Island, approximately 5.3 kilometers, with a pace between 6:00 and 6:30 minutes per kilometer.
The event will start with a thorough warm-up together, followed by the group run and stretching. The entire session will take about one hour. The best part? This event is free of charge, so you can enjoy a great workout without any financial burden.
Please RSVP by selecting “Going” if you plan on attending the event. This allows the organizers to have an estimate of the number of participants. Additionally, feel free to use the lockers and shower facilities at MAC, though there may be a fee associated with these amenities.
