Conference on the Commentary Tradition of Vergil’s Aeneid

If you’re a fan of the classics and diving deep into the commentary tradition of Vergil’s Aeneid, you won’t want to miss the upcoming conference hosted by Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest from September 19th to 21st, 2024. This event is organized by ELTE BTK Latin és Görög Tanszék and supported by the research project NKFI FK 153096, along with the Faculty of Humanities and University Excellence Fund.

The conference will take place at the ELTE Faculty of Humanities, Building B, 1st floor, Géza Alföldy Room. With a full program spread over three days, attendees can expect a deep dive into various aspects of commentary on Vergil’s Aeneid from different perspectives and eras.

Starting on September 19th, Thursday, the conference kicks off with opening remarks followed by panels chaired by experts, addressing topics ranging from different commentary styles to the influence of Vergil’s work on various aspects of art and education. Highlights include discussions on the Hercules and Cacus Episode in Aeneid 8, the role of the Aeneid in 17th-century Jesuit education, and much more.

Moving on to September 20th, Friday, the panels continue with a focus on Virgilian commentary, neglected manuscripts, and rediscovered commentaries on the Aeneid. The day culminates in a round-table discussion on writing commentaries in the 21st century featuring distinguished panelists.

The conference wraps up on September 21st, Saturday, with discussions on the illusion and epiphany within Virgil’s work, gender representation, and poetic elements in different commentaries.
